Chapter Ten

“So where are we headed?”

“Jingle, your ship needs to be slightly modified,” Alex replied.

“Isn’t that what they’ve been doing for the last two weeks?”

“I’m talking about the hull, Jingle. The wings and tail stabilizer don’t match the ship’s hull.”

“So, how do we make that happen?”

Alex paused and then replied, “I’m taking it to the Styx Nebula and fly it through the dust.”

“You’re what?”

“Jingle, have you ever flown through a nebula at a speed fast enough to damage the hull but not destroy it?”

“Well…no. I can’t say I have.”

“I have and it’s an extremely difficult maneuver. I’ll take your ship to the nebula and you’ll stay on mine until I return.”

“And just why can’t we both go to do this?”

Alex sighed and shook his head, “We can, if you insist on it!”

“What’s the problem, Alex.”

“I’m expecting you to challenge me on every suggestion I make. You are not one of my subordinates so I can’t order you what to do. I don’t have the time or the inclination to be constantly explaining everything.”

“Alex! I just asked why we both couldn’t go. I didn’t challenge you on it.”

Alex took a deep breath and sat back in his chair, “Jingle, I want you to think about why I wouldn’t want you to go with me and see if you can figure it out.” Jingle blinked and focused on the question. Alex added, “Jangle, let her work it out on her own!”

“Rats, I know why!” Jangle responded.

Jingle’s head went back, and her eyebrows came together. The reason was eluding her, and she couldn’t see what she was missing. There was no danger there to worry…She stopped. She looked at Alex on the monitor and said, “You’re worried that sending two ships to the nebula increases the odds of one of them being seen by the aliens.”

Alex chuckled, “You figured it out faster than I thought you would. Two ships moving through the dust will leave a huge trail behind them. I’ve got to be very careful not to make a huge wake in the dust as I fly through it. You’ve not flown through a nebula at high speed and the odds of us not being detected aren’t good.”

“Alex, what did you mean by us not working together when we come back to the Wilds?”

“There are two things we’ve got to get a handle on. First, we need to find out where those four hundred warships came from that rushed in at the gas giant. Second, we’ve got to find out just how extensive the alien civilization is in the nebula. By separating, we can get things done a lot faster.”

“And you’re going to take the nebula, right?”

Alex’s head went back slightly, “How did you figure that out?”

“You’re the one trained in space combat. I’m pretty much a novice when it comes to evading or attacking an enemy ship. Also, you’re getting my ship beat up so I can land on inhabited planets without causing an issue.”

“Very good, Jingle. You’ve shown me you get along well with strangers while you were on Bucket.
